Disability Support Services
Services are available to support students with disabilities in reaching their educational goals. Programs and services available include: verification of eligibility for disability support services, assessment for learning disabilities, assessment for speech/language disability, authorization of academic accommodations, production of alternate media, specialized counseling and advising, specialized tutoring, high school and community outreach, and special classes such as adapted physical education, speech, grammar, math, and computers.
What is DSS?
DSS provides support to students with disabilities in obtaining services and accommodations. Accommodations and services may include:
- Disability counseling
- Priority registration
- Testing for learning disabilities/or speech and language disabilities
- Note taking assistance
- Extended time on tests/assignments
- Sign language interpreters
- Equipment loan
- High Tech Center
- Special classes
Who is Eligible?
A student must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Southwestern College student
- Complete a DSS application to request services
- Have a disability that can be verified
How to Apply?
- DSS applications are available at Southwestern College at the One-Stop Student Services Center S108, DSS office, or call the DSS Office at voice (619) 482-6512, TTY (619) 482-6470, Fax (619) 482-6511
- Provide documentation to verify your disability or bring in the name and phone number of a professional who can verify your disability
- Submit an application and verification information in person or by mail
What Happens After Applying?
- When documentation verifying a disability is received at the DSS Office, you will be contacted to arrange a one-hour orientation appointment
- If testing for a learning disability is requested, you will receive a half-hour appointment with a DSS Specialist
