Evaluations

The Evaluations Office reviews academic records of students to determine eligibility for the Associate Degree, Certificate of Achievement and General Education Certification. Coursework taken at other colleges and universities is reviewed to determine equivalency to Southwestern College courses. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with an academic counselor to assist them in establishing a student educational plan. The Evaluations Office is located on the second floor of the Student Services Center.

Petitioning for graduation

A candidate does not automatically receive the degree upon completion of graduation requirements. Petitions for graduation are accepted year round. There is a specific deadline to petition for each term. Please refer to the calendar in the class schedule for specific dates. Petitions for graduation for an AA, AS and Certificate of Achievement are located in the Admissions Center, Higher Education Center at National City and the Education Center at San Ysidro. For further information call (619) 482-6326 or (619) 482-6590.

Graduation Check
Come by or call the Counseling Center, located on the second floor of the Students Services Center, to schedule your Graduation Check appointment. Students with 45.0 or more units should meet with a counselor to determine if they are close to completing requirements for the Associates degree. Qualified students must petition for graduation by:

Fall 2007 graduation – submit your petition by November 2, 2007
Spring 2008 graduation – submit your petition by March 7, 2008
Summer 2008 graduation – submit your petition by April 4, 2008

Petitions may be submitted to the Office of Evaluations located on the second floor of the Student Services Center or at the Higher Education Center or the Education Center at San Ysidro. Petitions are located under “printable forms” at the college website.

Transcripts from other institutions

You must have official transcripts from other institutions on file with the Admissions Center. The transcripts must be sent via mail from the other institution directly to Southwestern College. The transcripts are required regardless of the usability of the credits or the grades achieved.

General education certification

If you are planning to transfer to the California State University System, including San Diego State University, you may request General Education Certification or IGETC. If you are transferring to a university in the UC system you may also request IGETC. General Education Certification and IGETC certify that you have completed all lower division general education requirements. You can make your request in one of two ways. One, when you are petitioning for graduation, fill out the section stating your intention to transfer. Second, you can file a Petition for General Education Certification. The request should be made during your last semester at Southwestern. You should make an appointment to see a counselor to make sure you have fulfilled all of your general education requirements.

Degrees and Certificates

Southwestern College recognizes three types of graduation. They are: · Associate in Arts Degree · Associate in Science Degree · Certificate of Achievement. Associate degrees are earned by completing required general education courses, specific major courses and graduation requirements. Certificates of achievement are earned by completing a specified course of study, usually without the general education or other requirements. For more detailed information on degree and certificate requirements you should make an appointment to see a counselor.

Graduation with honors

You can graduate with honors if you complete all coursework for an AA or AS degree and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher of degree applicable units in all coursework completed. You must have transcripts from all other colleges attended on file in the Admissions Center to have your grade point average calculated for honors. For the graduation ceremony, your GPA is calculated through the previous fall semester only. You must qualify for honors in the fall semester prior to the spring graduation ceremony in order to participate in the ceremony wearing the honors gold tassel. After all final grades have been evaluated and you qualify for honors, a notation will be made on your transcript and your diploma.

Commencement

Southwestern College has one annual graduation ceremony in the spring of the academic year. All graduates from the fall semester and candidates for spring and summer are eligible to participate in the ceremony. It is important to meet the deadline to petition for graduation. To learn more about the ceremony and how to participate call the Graduation Hotline, (619) 482-6580.
