Florence, Italy 2010

SPRING 2010 SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE IS THE HOST COLLEGE FOR THE SDICCCA SEMESTER ABROAD PROGRAM IN FLORENCE, ITALY!

Departure date: Thursday February 11th 2010

Return date: Saturday April 24th 2010

AIFS will serve as the provider for services related to this program
Classes will start approximately three weeks prior to departure at Southwestern College

The cost for this semester abroad program is approximately $6,840 (based on an enrollment of 45 students), and includes the following:
  1. Roundtrip airfare to Florence, Italy.
  2. Shared room in a self-catering student apartment in the Historical Center of Florence. Typically there are four students to each apartment with regular cleaning service and a change of linen provided. Apartments are a maximum of 20 minutes walk from the study center.
  3. Native Italian faculty, and an on-site coordinator in Florence.
  4. Use of the AIFS Educational Center in Florence at Dante Alighieri, Piazza della Repubblica.
  5. Transportation from airports in Italy.
  6. A ten-week city bus pass while in Florence.
  7. A ten-week museum pass providing unlimited free entry to the following museums: Uffizi, Bargello, Accademia, Palazzo Pitti, San Marco Museum, Boboli Gardens, Medici Chapel, Cenacolo di Sant¹Andrea del Sarto, Giardino della Villa, Medicea di Castello, Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano and Villa Medicea della Patraia.
  8. A full-day excursion to Siena and San Gimignano including round-trip transportation by private bus, the services of a professional English-speaking guide, lunch and entrances.
  9. A full-day excursion to Perugia and Assisi including round-trip transportation by private bus, the services of a professional English-speaking guide, lunch and entrances.
  10. The educational center has six computers (PCs), which are free of charge as well as free wireless connection throughout the center for students to use with their laptops. In addition 50 hours per student Internet/email access to be used at any one of 16 different centers around Florence, offering computer access from 9am to 1 am.
  11. Membership with borrowing rights to the British Institute Library in Florence.
  12. Student medical and program fee refund insurance policies, as outlined in the program brochure. Coverage includes $10,000 accidental medical expense and $10,000 accidental death payment plus 24-hour emergency care assistance during the program and repatriation in cases of verified emergency beyond the students¹ control.
(There is also an additional nonrefundable fee of approximately$450 for airline taxes/fees, and an apartment security deposit, which is refundable at the end of program).

  5. Visa fees
  6. Passport fees

  8. And other related items not included in the program cost.
Financial aid is available for students who are eligible; please contact Kathy Johnson at Southwestern College, as she is the financial aid advisor for this program (kjohnson@swccd.edu). Students must apply for financial aid at Southwestern College, as it is the host college for this program. Each student must fill out a FAFSA form to be eligible for financial aid. Pell Grant students may also apply for the Gilman Scholarship, a federally funded program to assist Pell Grant eligible students in their pursuit of an education abroad experience.

There is a $400.00 application fee due at the time of registration with the balance of the program costs due in three payments (one in October 2009, one in November, with final a payment due in December)

To be eligible for the program you must have completed at least 12 college units and have a 2.0 grade point average by the end of the fall semester 2009. Priority for this program is given to students attending SDICCCA community colleges.

There will be three mandatory orientation meetings one in December 2009, and the other two in January and February 2010. As SWC is hosting this program you will have to register (if you are not currently a Southwestern College student) at Southwestern College for spring 2010, and pay student registration fees to Southwestern College for the spring 2010 semester of classes.
