August 13, 2013
The JAGS will open defense of the Mountain Conference & American Bowl Championship when camp opens August 15th. Consistency is a key to the 2013 SOUTHWESTERN football program. Coach Ed Carberry returns for his seventh season at SWC, we have our coaching staff that returns nearly in tact. This makes practice, game planning and game decision making easier and more effective. Our defensive coordinator Junior Monarrez begins his fourth season (11th overall at SWC) as our defensive coordinator. An outstanding teacher / communicator he will see a lot of familiar faces as our defense return numerous starters. The remainder of our staff is:

Offensive staff:
Shayne Ganz OL, Karl Danielson OL, Pete Tauvela RB (recruiting coordinator), Brad Carter WR (university placement coordinator) and Drew Westling QB’s.

Coaches

Defensive staff: Travis Crawford DB, Clyde Logan LB, Guy Richaduli DB, George Jackson DL and Jamil Reymore DL.

OFFENSE: After leading the state in offense in 2012 the JAGS face the task of replacing the entire offense many of whom have moved on to universities. The unquestioned leader of the offense is sophomore QB Frank Foster (Valhalla HS). Foster finished the 2012 season leading the offense for 4 TD drives in our Bowl win. He also led Southern California in pass completion percentage on the season. The backup QB spot is a battle between Nate Long (Mission Bay HS), Ricky Esteves (Chula Vista HS) and Luis Perez (Otay Lakes HS). Live scrimmage action will determine the backup and their in season playing time. RB Charles Westbrook (Coronado HS) finished the 2012 season as the American Bowl MVP with a 200 yard rushing performance. Three other RB’s are in hunt for playing time, Dominque Canez (Otay Ranch HS) Cedrick Agueman (Dodge City JC) and returner Junior Nemorin (East Bay HS / Tampa FL). Although the OL had 4 of 5 sophomores leave with scholarships we return a lot of experience. Andres Perez (Bonita Vista HS) is the top returner at RG. Perez has the size 6’3, 305 lbs had a great offseason and has the size, strength and grades to be a D1 offensive lineman. Lafaele Pasello (Castle HS / HI), Vince Salinas (Horizon HS) and Kevin Bowen (Helix Charter HS) will begin camp as the starters but the pads will tell who up front play in the games. Freshman giant Ram Samuels (Chula Vista HS) will press for playing time. Three freshmen will work in the mix at TE, John Boyd (Valhalla HS), Adam Aguon (Sweetwater HS) and Puletini Leuluso (Radford HS HI) have all shown great promise. The receiver position is deep and talented. Rashad Ridley (San Diego HS) and Cameron Lee (Helix Charter HS) have a lot of experience at the slot position. Both will be pushed by Kevin Mills (Valhalla HS) who had a big Alex Spanos All Star Game with two TD’s and a long run. Marcus Harris (Birmingham HS) and Jason Gaines (Christian HS) return from last season’s team. Harris had 5 interceptions in 2012 as he split time both ways. Khari Kimbrough (San Diego HS) has made the transition from QB to WR. Freshmen Chris Kelly (Clairemont HS) and David Eguiza (Eastlake HS) have shown good progress over the summer. There are numerous other WR’s that will have to make their move when the contact starts.

DEFENSE: Jeremy Burgos (Notre Dame HS / IL) the 2012 Mountain Conference Defensive Player of the Year returns as his LB spot as does Khaalid Abdullah (Mount Miguel HS) at the Mike LB. Abdullah was a unanimous first team All Conference and first team All State middle LB in 2012. Both have had incredible strength and size gains in the off season. Freshman LB Blake Wilson (Eastlake HS) has been impressive in the spring and summer. Among the 20 LB’s on the 2013 roster freshman Santana Leomiti (Olympian HS) and Nick Galatis (Clairemont HS) are both big hitters that were 100+ tacklers in high school. Everybody’s pre-season All American Alphonso Hampton (Morse HS) 6’5, 320 lbs. returns to anchor the interior of the defensive line. A giant with exceptional quickness, Hampton showed great promise as a freshman and is ready to reach his potential. Jalal Yousofzai (Washington HS / AZ) is the returning conference leader in sack’s. Richard Thorne (Mission Bay HS) is back for this third year with the JAGS and understands the defense. The secondary is a work in progress with this area having the lease amount of returning players. Sophomore Daniel Castro (Sweetwater HS) had a great spring in the weight room and on the field. Two other sophomores have performed well, Kiman Edwards (West Branch HS / CA) and David Clark (Serra HS). The competition will heat up during camp.

KICK TEAMS: With 20 LB’s on the roster the coverage teams should be outstanding. We enter the season with no proven kickers or punters on the squad. The place kickers are: freshman State Champion Anthony Herrera (Madison HS), Billy Bechtel (Otay Ranch HS) and Van Saban (Helix Charter HS). The punters are Juan Luna (Castle Park HS), Ryan Miguel (Bonita Vista HS) and Saban, Nemorin, Ridley, Lee and Agyeman are the leading return candidates.
