PCAC Honors Jaguar Baseball Player Miguel Solano
Posted: 3/5/2013
Southwestern College baseball player Miguel Solano has been honored as PCAC Men’s Athlete of the Week. Miguel

Solano, a freshman second baseman from Bonita Vista High School across the street from Southwestern, had a 9-for-15 week as the Jaguars took over the undisputed PCAC lead with a 3-0 record one week into a 25-game conference schedule.

Solano went 2-for-5 and drove in a run as the Jaguars opened conference play with a 9-8 win over Palomar, one of the teams they tied with for last year’s PCAC title.  He went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs in a 15-2 victory over Imperial Valley.  Solano wrapped up the week by going 3-for-5 in an 8-0 win over San Diego Mesa, the other team Southwestern tied with for the 2012 PCAC championship.

Honorable mention for the week went to Southwestern baseball pitcher Juwun McCray, San Diego City College baseball player Matt Arlington, Palomar basketball player Joe Vaz and Palomar swimmer Wyatt Woodward.

Arlington, a sophomore outfielder from Point Loma High School, went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs in a 12-5 win over Imperial Valley. He doubled in a 6-3 win over district rival Mesa. And he slugged a home run in a 5-2 loss to Grossmont.

Vaz, a 7-foot-1 sophomore center from Rancho Buena Vista High School and PCAC Co-Player of the Year, scored 21 points and grabbed10 rebounds -- and severely disrupted Los Angeles Pierce’s offense in the paint -- as the conference co-champion Comets (21-9) opened up a 25-point lead and upset the

Brahmas 73-55 on the road. The win, in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs, moved Palomar to within two wins of a trip to the CCCAA State Final Four.

Woodward, a sophomore from Palm Springs High School who helped Palomar place second to Santa Rosa in last year’s CCCAA state meet, won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.01, the 100 free in 49.72 and the 200 individual medley in 2:09.26 as the Comets downed Mesa 176-70
