Nikki Berumen is Recognize by PCAC This Week

NBSan Diego Mesa College’s Alexandra Mootry (softball) and Brooke Guinty (track & field) have been honored as Women’s Athletes of the Week by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.

“Z” Mootry, sophomore first baseman from Patrick Henry High School, went 6-for-13 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Her performance helped the defending PCAC champion Olympians go 5-0 for the week as they moved into a tie for first with Palomar.  Mootry has signed with Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Guinty, a freshman from Burselon (Texas) High, cleared 12 feet, 0 inches in the pole vault over the weekend competing against four-year college, community college, club and unattached opponents in the Pasadena Games at Pasadena City College’s Robinson Stadium.  Guinty’s performance placed her third in the College / University / Open Division behind Cal State Northridge’s Tiana Webberly, who won the vault at 12 feet, 6 inches. Guinty moved up to second in the vault on the Southern California list and first in the PCAC. She also throws the javelin and is an automatic Southern Cal qualifier in that event.

Honorable mention went to Mesa swimmer Giselle Suarez and Southwestern softball player Nikki Berumen.

Suarez, a sophomore from Mater Dei (Chula Vista) High, won the 200-yard freestyle, an off-event for her, and her specialty, the 100 backstroke, and led off the first-place 200 relay team as Mesa repeated as PCAC dual-meet champ by defeating Grossmont 214-98.

Berumen, a sophomore first baseman from Hilltop High School, went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in a 16-0 win over Imperial Valley and was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 7-4 loss to San Diego City College. She’s batting .423 (.435 in the PCAC).
