The PCAC has named Palomar tennis player Katie Stowe and Southwestern softball player Gabrielle Beasley as Women’s Athletes of the Week.
Stowe, a freshman from Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, won the PCAC singles championship at the Balboa Tennis Club. Stowe, seeded No. 5, defeated the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 1 seeds on her way to the PCAC title, upsetting teammate and No. 1 seed Karleyne Ishima-Oien 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
Beasley, a sophomore pitcher / second baseman from Steele Canyon, won five straight games as the Jaguars defeated San Diego Mesa 4-1, Imperial Valley 6-0 and 10-0 and Pasadena City College 9-0 and 17-3. She struck out 27 and allowed one earned run in 25 innings and went 12-for-20 at the plate with six steals.
Honorable mention went to Mesa diver Michelle McDonald, who was co-athlete of the week on March 10 and was unable to win twice, and softball players Darlene Trong (Mesa) and Lisa Pena (San Diego City).
McDonald, a sophomore from Mar Vista, won the 1-meter (231.25 points) and 3-meter (232.85 points) titles at the SoCal diving finals.
Trong, a sophomore catcher from Orange Glen, was 4-for-6 with two doubles as Mesa lost to Southwestern and defeated Grossmont 9-2.
Pena, a sophomore pitcher / centerfielder from Clairemont, went 7-for-7 for the week against Grossmont (4-for-4, two-run HR in a 16-12 loss) and Palomar (3-for-3 in an 11-0 loss).
