Dual Track Stars are Honored This Week

PAlemanCuyamaca College track & field distance runner Paige Hughes and San Diego Mesa swimmer Alejandra Pantoja have been selected by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as Women’s Athletes of the Week.

Hughes, a freshman from Valhalla High School, was a triple winner in the PCAC Championships at Cuyamaca. She won the 1500 – meter run in 4:49.74, the 5,000 meters in 18:45.59 and the 10,000 meters in 39:39.57.  Hughes’ 10,000 time was a Cuyamaca record.

Pantoja, a freshman from Brawley High School, won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.54 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.80, was second in the 200 frees and swam on four winning relay teams as she helped lead the Olympians to the team title with a record 997 points in the PCAC Championships at Palomar’s Wallace Memorial Pool.

Honorable mention went to Paula Aleman (Southwestern track & field) and softball players Brittany Kamfunik (Mesa) and Ariel Bochniak (Southwestern).

Aleman, a sophomore from Sweetwater High School, won the 400 hurdles in the conference finals, running a 1:05.64.

Kamfonik, a sophomore third baseman from Point Loma High School, went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs in a 12-1 win over Imperial Valley and was 3-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-6 win over SD City.

Bochniak, a freshman shortstop from Hilltop, went 4-for-9 as the Jaguars defeated City College and Palomar, then lost a non-conference game to Santiago Canyon.
