Track & Field athletes Dylan Marx from San Diego Mesa College and Branden Greene of Southwestern are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s final Men’s Athletes of the Week for the 2012-13 academic year.
Marx, a sophomore out of Mount Miguel High School, led the Olympians to third place in the CCCAA State Championships at College of San Mateo. He won both the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:07.12, and the 5,000-meter run in 14:42.29. His performance earned Mesa 20 of its 56 points as the Olympians finished four points behind Mt. SAC, who had 60 points. Riverside City College won the state team title with 151 points.
The Jaguars’ Greene, a freshman from Bonita Vista High School, cleared 2.08 meters (6 feet, 9 ¾ inches) to win the high jump in the state meet.
Honorable mention for the week went to two other track & field athletes, Jared Pickering of Mesa and Leonardo Banales from Cuyamaca.
Pickering, a sophomore from Rancho Bernardo High School, placed second in the state 200 meters in 21.78, finishing just behind winner Justin Thymes of Riverside City College who ran a 21.42. He also took seventh in the 100 meters in 10.66, anchored Mesa’s third-place 4x400 relay team (3:13.67) and ran on eighth-place 4x100 team (41.40).
Banales, a freshman out of Brawley High School, finished second to Marx in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He ran 9:18.07.
