Sydni Toilolo is Honored by PCAC

SToiloloThe Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has named San Diego Mesa tennis player Sophia Najera and Mesa softball player Jazlyn Hallare as Women’s Athletes of the Week.

Najera, a freshman from San Diego Charter High, knocked off returning ITC All-American Remy Littrell, the 2013 PCAC singles champion and Player of the Year, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the Olympians’ 8-1 win over Palomar. She also teamed with Erika Castro to defeat Littrell and Teresa Deanda 8-5 in No. 1 doubles.

Hallare, Mesa’s freshman right fielder from Cathedral Catholic High, went 9-for-14 for the week. She went 2-for-4 in a 5-4 win over Grossmont, was 1-for-2 in an 8-0 win over Imperial Valley and went 6-for-8 in a doubleheader split with Glendale (a 14-9 win, a 13-4 loss).

Honorable mention went to Mesa athletes Kim Perkins (track & field), Ian Wong and Erica Howland (both swim & dive) and Southwestern softball player Sydni Toilolo.

Perkins, a freshman from Curtis (WA) Senior High School, won the triple jump at 38 feet, 7.75 inches at the Cal State Los Angeles Invite.

Wong, a freshman from China, helped Mesa’s swimming and diving team to a third-place finish out of 11 schools in the Chaffey Invitational as she won the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.66, was second in the 100 breast in 1:11.16, helped Mesa’s 200 medley relay team to first place, the 400 medley team to third, the 800 free relay team fourth and also was 10th in the 100 individual medley.

Howland, a sophomore from Scripps Ranch High School, was second in 1-meter diving (153.15 points) and 3-meter (155.6 points) diving.

Sydni Toilolo, a freshman from Helix High, had a 7-for-18 week with a double, four home runs, nine runs scored and seven RBIs. She helped the Jaguars beat San Diego City 11-2 in a PCAC game, then win four of five games in the 37th Golden West Tournament, where they lost in the championship game to East Los Angeles 6-1.
