Head Coach

Jerry Bartow

Head Coach, Jerry BartowIn 1976, and after two C.I.F. Championships, Jerry Bartow left San Diego's Hoover High School to join the faculty at Southwestern College. In the three decades since, "Forty", "Lefty", "The Lefthander", "Four-Oh", "Jerry-J", "Daddy Dearest", or "Coach", has guided SWC to Ten Conference Championships, finished second in the state in 2008, has placed 90 percent of his students in 4-year Universities through scholarships, and has lead the way in generating hundreds of thousands of dollars for the baseball program at Southwestern College. Whether it be through Christmas tree sales, football games, or selling hot dogs to night school students, Bartow has a never-ending drive to afford his players the best athletic experience possible at the community college level. He is equally determined to have his players complete their college education, thus giving them unlimited opportunities once their playing days are over.

Coach Bartow was a member of the San Diego County High School Coaching Legends Inductees honored by the San Diego Hall of Champions in November of 2003.

The Carl Mays Connection...

Carl Mays, New York YankeesCoach Bartow's greatest influence was "the best pitcher never to make it into the Hall of Fame", former Major League player, the late, great Carl Mays.  Mr Mays took Bartow under his wing as a teenager, became his "adopted" Dad, and taught him how to use his pitching talents to get him a college education, and ultimately, into coaching.  When Bartow came to San Diego in the late 1960's to coach, "Mom" and "Dad Mays" followed.  (Imagine being a high school pitcher for Hoover HS in San Diego and having Carl Mays as your pitching coach.)  In 1969, MLB Hall of Famer, and Hoover Alumnus, Ted Williams, helped pay for a new field at Hoover High School.  Many speculate that Mr. Williams did that, so "Carl's kid would have a good field to coach on...."

"Dad Mays" was inducted into the Missouri Hall of Fame this past year.  With their permission, read about Mr. Mays.  This summer, Mansfield, Missouri, will Honor Mr. Mays with a statue, a parade, and a permanent exhibit in their Historical Society Museum.
