Employment Help - Cover Letter
The cover letter is very important. Never send a resume without a cover letter. In fact, most companies will not accept your resume without one.
The purpose of a cover letter is to express your interest in an organization and to request an interview in a short but concise manner. The opening paragraph should be eye-catching and show you want the people to hire you, but try not to go too far. Remember, be clear. This paragraph should also refer to the specific position you are applying for and highlight areas in your background that make you an attractive candidate for it.
You can go into more of your other highlights in the next paragraph which
can include (but certainly not be limited to) specific aspects of your education,
training, and experience that relate to the position or organization to
which you are applying. You don't want to give away too much here. After
highlighting them, you can end the paragraph by having the person refer
to your resume.
The concluding paragraph should request action by the reader in a polite
manner. You can write something like:
I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss
my qualifications and employment potential in greater detail. You may contact
me by phone at (your phone numbers) or by writing me an e-mail message at
(your e-mail here).
This may be a good time to review your outgoing message on your message
service or answering machine. This is the employer's first contact with
you. Try to make your message professional and clear.
You should end your letter by thanking the company for the opportunity and reiterating your interest by offering a closing sentence like, "I look forward to hearing from you" or something to that extent.
