Dabbling in the Arts

Visual Art (Session II Only)
This creative art class will allow students to produce works of art which will include portraits, mandalas and a sculpture. The projects will have historical connections with Roman sculpture and the artist Leonardo da Vinci as they recreate the Mona Lisa in their own style, be it anime abstract or traditional. Come and unwrap your imagination as you create your own master pieces working with various mediums.

Beginning Beaded Jewelry
Are you interested in becoming a jewelry-maker? Well let's get started here. In this class you will create your own jewelry pieces as well as learn basics of beading necklaces and bracelets. Students will learn knotting techniques and bead weaving. This is a wonderful class for kids who love working with their hands and designing patterns. Learn how to make beautiful jewelry for yourself and for gifts with simple, easy to find materials. And boys; this one isn't just for girls, come make gifts for your mom, grandma and friends!

Pottery Making
Pinch, pull, coil and slab! Have messy fun transforming a lump of raw clay into mice, birds, or rhinos or make a bowl or personalized mug for a family member. This course features techniques used in ceramics to make glazed pottery. All works will be fired by the instructor.

The Magic of Reading
Do you enjoy exploring the depths of the abyss, or blasting off to the solar system? What about creating your own adventures? Well come join us in this exciting class. The Magic of Reading class will combine the understanding of the different types of genres in literature and the creation of your own literary works. This class will improve your reading and critical thinking skills through lectures, group collaboration and hands on activities.

Kid's Culinary Academy (Session II Only)
Do you love to cook? Are you interested in in creating your own recipe book? Well this is the class for you. In the Kid's Culinary Academy, the art and science of cooking will be explored as students learn kitchen safety, basic cooking techniques, and menu planning and food preparation. Through a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands on cooking projects, students will learn new skills in the kitchen and discover health food choices that are simple to make and nutritious for you.

Fun, relaxing and confidence building classes in which many aspects of painting with versatile acrylics is taught. Learn how to plan art work that you love. Using provided sketches, begin by chalking in and complete your painting with glazing. Many entertaining demonstrations of techniques and materials. Learn about all the elements of art including color in particular, as well as: line, texture, shape and value, and the organizing principles of art such as: balance, harmony, variety, economy, proportion and movement. A wealth of information in a calming and friendly environment with helpful individual attention for each student.

Web Movies
Learn how to combine video, audio, and images into a movie that you can post and view on the internet, your iPod, and your home video player. Work in the Southwestern College Telemedia lab with programs like iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and Gargeband. Join us and produce your own web movie showcasing work you and your classmates create.

Digital Photography
Smile :-) Come and learn about your camera and its functions and features. Learn how to download and edit your photos on the computer. Take well-composed professional-looking photos while creating a portfolio of your work. Every day you'll embark upon a new and challenging photo project! You will also learn basic graphic design.
You will need your own digital camera to take this class. No phone cameras, please!

Building Cities of the Future
What is your vision of a city in the future? Well come make your vision a reality. Cities of the Future will allow you to work in cooperative groups and build a city which will include everything from transportation to housing. You will learn about how cities grow and develop, the challenges facing city planners today as well as how to create better places to live. This creative class will challenge you to design all aspects of a city of tomorrow.

Crime Scene Investigation
Explore the mystery and allure of Forensic Science! This class will introduce students to the world of investigation. Students will learn how to take and examine finger prints, study tire tracks, figure out which ink was used in counterfeiting and analyze a crime scene. They will also learn what it takes to become an investigator in the future as they study the exciting and mysterious field of forensic science.

Inside The World of Biology
Are you interested in Biology? Do you want to explore the make-up of cells or learn how human physiology works? Then come learn in this fun and hands- on class. In this class you will explore the inside of fetal pigs; explore cells under the microscope, the human circulatory system and everything in between. So if you're interested in the study of LIFE and the changes that take place with and around all living things, then this is the class for you.

From Past to Present

Dig Our Past: Archaeology and Egypt
Future archaeologists will receive a foundation in the basic principles of archaeology. The many activities in this class will consist of the extraordinary lives of the ancient royal Egyptians as well as hands-on projects focusing on mummies, hieroglyphics and much more. If you like working with your hands and getting dirty, then come "Dig Our Past" and uncover the ancient world of the Egyptians.

Math and Magic (Session II only)
Do you like the mystery of magic? What about the numbers in math? Well let's combine the two. Come join us in this unique class, where you will learn skills to help you to improve your math skills as well as learn some tricks that will have you dazzle your family and friends. Math and Magic is a hands-on class that will increase your knowledge of math through creative and fun ways.

The exploration of math and economics and how they work together in this unique and exciting course, students will explore real life mathematical applications and how they correlate with basic Economic principles. Through interactive project based learning, students will explore such topics as goods and services, taxation, entrepreneurship and more! So come join us in this fun and challenging class.
