Degree and Certificate |
This page contains answers to common questions
regarding Criminal Justice and program/degree requirements.
- What is Criminal Justice?
- Where can I find course and program requirements... ?
- What are the Criminal Justice degree and certificate requirements?

Criminal Justice and the Administration of Justice are essentially the same
thing. Community Colleges use the term AoJ and four year institutions (4 year
colleges) use the term Criminal Justice. In addition Criminal Justice is the
term used to broadly describe the entire system which includes the three main
branches:
Law Enforcement (Police, Sheriff, State Police, Federal Police and
Federal Agencies)
Judiciary (Courts, Appellate Courts, District Attorney, Defense, Para-Legal)
Corrections (Jail, Prison, Probation. Parole)

The information on course offerings is found in the College catalog where
degree and certificate requirements are located. This catalog is renewed
regularly. In addition the college puts out a course or class schedule each
semester (including summer). Here you find a complete listing of day and night
classes as well as online offerings for the main campus and satellites. (See
college web site for additional information: www.swccd.edu
)
In addition this web page contains the degree and certificate requirements.
Criminal Justice is found on this page and Forensics as well as Administration
of Justice, each have their own page.

These courses along with the General Education requirements under Plan B
equate to an Associates in Arts Degree and meet the requirements for transfer
to SDSU and perhaps other 4 year colleges. Or you may do the General
Education under Plan A to meet the Associates degree (only)
requirements.

The Criminal Justice degree is most often referred to as a
"transfer" degree. The reason being that this degree contains all of
the course work needed to transfer to San Diego State University as a
"Junior". The key TRANSFER courses being:
AJ111 Administration of Justice
Poly Sci 102
Soc 101
Soc 110
Statistics (Math119 or Psyc270 or Soc201)
These courses along with the general education requirements and the other
courses listed above enable a student to receive a (Associates in Arts) degree
at SWC while transferring to SDSU. Students who meet the minimum requirements
at SDSU can transfer straight to SDSU. This works for those who want to take
an Associates degree before moving on to a four year college. [You should get
advice from Counseling or the AoJ staff on this decision.]
