Grossmont College soccer player Amber Anderson and Southwestern volleyball player Amanda Jones have been honored as Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Athletes of the Week.
Anderson, a sophomore goalkeeper from Helix High School, recorded her second and third shutouts in a row in last week’s action. Anderson notched eight saves as Grossmont blanked district rival Cuyamaca 1-0 and came back with seven saves as the Griffins shut out San Diego City College 1-0. The previous week, Anderson had five saves in a 3-0 win over Southwestern.Jones, a sophomore and a 4.0 student who is among the PCAC leaders in digs, contributed 20 digs as the Jaguars swept Cuyamaca 25-14, 25-21, 25-21.
Honorable mention for the week went to San Diego Mesa cross country runner Michelle Thompson, Mesa volleyball player Heather Hartwell and Mesa water polo player Arianne Lopez.
Thompson, a sophomore from Mt. Carmel High School, ran 3.1 miles in 18:43 to place seventh out of 272 runners in the 62nd Mt. SAC Invitational / Southern California Preview cross country meet at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Her performance helped the Olympians placed 14th out of 39 teams. Hartwell, a sophomore middle blocker from Rancho Bernardo High School, had eight kills (with a .400 hitting percentage), eight service aces and eight blocks in the Olympians’ 25-11, 25-15, 28-30, 25-12 victory over Southwestern. She came back with five kills, two aces and three blocks in a 25-13, 25-23, 25-10 sweep of Imperial Valley. Lopez, a freshman center forward from Rancho Bernardo High School, helped keep Mesa unbeaten in conference water polo by totaling four goals, two assists and four steals – and earning two ejections -- in a 13-4 victory over Miramar. The win extends the state No. 10-ranked Olympians’ conference record to 6-0 and their overall mark to 17-5.
