Southwestern College’s Rene Fimbres and Palomar’s Jayce Hensley have been selected by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as its Men’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended on Sunday.
Fimbres, a freshman from San Ysidro High School, came up big in the Jaguars’ 6-1 victory over MiraCosta. Fimbres, a two-time All-South Bay League selection in high school, scored two goals against the Spartans.
Honorable mention for the week went to San Diego City College soccer player German Sanchez, Grossmont football player Matt Jarvis and Palomar football player Orenzo Davis.
Sanchez, a 6-foot-0, 215-pound freshman goalkeeper from Point Loma High School, played a major role as the Knights moved past Palomar to take over the PCAC lead by one point over the Comets. Sanchez, who has recorded 101 saves in 735 minutes on the season, teamed with Arturo Garcia to shut out Imperial Valley 1-0. Two days later, he notched 13 saves as the Knights and Palomar battled to a 1-1 tie. Jarvis, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound sophomore quarterback from Grossmont High School, completed 16-of-30 pass attempts with no interceptions for 367 yards and four touchdowns as the Griffins beat up on Orange Coast 43-12. Jarvis, starting his first game since an earlier injury, led the way as Grossmont advanced to 7-1. Davis, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound sophomore running back from Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, and the SCFA National Division Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, rushed for 175 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries as the Comets defeated Long Beach City College 44-23. His second TD, a 47-yard run midway through the second quarter, gave Palomar its first lead of the night, which it never relinquished. Davis also had one pass reception for 21 yards and returned three kickoffs for 67 yards. An individual may only receive PCAC Athlete of the Week honors once in his sport’s season. Davis was conference Men’s Co-Athlete of the Week for the week that ended Sept. 6.
