Cross Country Runner Nadine Mulvany is honored as PCAC Female Athlete of the Week

Southwestern College cross country runner Nadine Mulvany and San Diego Mesa water polo player Natalie Thompson have been selected by the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference as Women’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.

Mulvany, a freshman from Nile C. Kinnick High School on the Yokosuka U.S. Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, won the conference cross country finals last Friday at Morley Field in Balboa Park. Mulvany ran the 5K course in 19:33.30 in defeating Southwestern teammate Tanya Valenzuela, who placed second, by just under right seconds. Her performance led the way as the Jaguars finished first, second, fourth, fifth and six to defeat second-place Mesa 18-40.

Thompson, a sophomore driver from Clairemont High School, played a big role as the Olympians defeated Southwestern 10-9 in overtime and Grossmont 8-3to finish the conference regular season with an 8-0 record.Thompson brought the Olympians back from a deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter with her second goal of regulation play. In the overtime, Thompson scored both of Mesa’s goals, the second one with 27 seconds remaining to win the game. She also had two assists and three steals in the win over Grossmont.

Honorable mention went to San Diego Mesa volleyball player Amber Davidson, Palomar volleyball player Shelley Morton, Miramar soccer player Kelsey Warner and San Diego City College volleyball player Hannah Andrews.

Davidson, a sophomore setter from Spanish Springs High School in Sparks, NV and a transfer from the University of Nevada, helped the first-place Olympians to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-21 sweep of Cuyamaca with 26 assists, two aces and three blocks and a 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 sweep of Grossmont with 35 assists, seven kills (with a .429 hitting percentage) and three aces. Morton, sophomore outside hitter from Fallbrook High School, recorded 32 kills for the week, 13 as the Comets swept Imperial Valley 25-7, 25-16, 25-19 and 19 in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 sweep of San Diego City. Warner, a freshman goalkeeper from Westview High School, shut out first-place Mesa 3-0 and teamed with Catherine Miller to shut out Palomar. She had five saves against the Olympians. Warner has goals-against average of 0.438 with 10 season shutouts. Andrews, a freshman Libero from San Pasqual High School who carries a 3.5 grade-point average, had 21 digs and five aces for the Knights in two matches last week.
