Athletic Training Room

It is the mission of the Health, Exercise Science and Athletics Department at Southwestern College to provide an Athletic Training facility that creates a fair environment for all student athletes to access the best possible care and prevention of sports related injuries. Each individual athlete will receive the best attention possible. It is the responsibility of the Athletic Training staff and a team physician specializing in orthopedic medicine to monitor approximately 400 student athletes competing on 16 athletic teams. It is the mission of this staff to return our athletes to full participation as quickly and safely as possible.

It is paramount that the Southwestern Health, Exercise Science and Athletics Department prioritize the health and welfare of their student-athletes. Through communication, creativity and innovation, the athletic training staff and team physician collaborate in a team approach in order to meet the needs of the student-athlete. The student-athletes will work with the most educated and proficient certified athletic trainers available. These athletic trainers are held to the highest standards of their peers as well as the Southwestern College Athletic Department.
 
The Southwestern College Athletic Training Room is located at the north end of the Health, Exercise Science and Athletics building. It is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm and two hours before game time on weekends. Should your school have any special needs please contact us in advance. Emergency equipment and first aid supplies will be available and a trainer will attend each athletic event. A team physician will be present at all football games. In case of an emergency, Sharp Hospital is within 6 minutes of the Southwestern campus.

Jim Hammond
Head Trainer

Jim Hammond, CSMT

Jim Hammond’s athletic contacts read like a who’s who in the San Diego sports world. “Bone,” as he is called by most that know him, has been associated with such coaching greats as Don Coryell, Sid Gillman, George Allen, Wayne Sevier and Joe Gibbs. He has worked with professional football people such as Don Klosterman, Gene Klein, Johnny Sanders and Tank Younger to name a few. Hammond’s real work has been with the athletes, like NFL Hall of Fame players Johnny Unitas, Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow Sr. "Bone" has also had professional experiences with Muhammad Ali and several NFL Pro Bowls.

Hammond has served as a Head Trainer at both the college and professional football level. Included on the college list are The University of Hawaii and San Diego State University. The list of professional teams includes the NFL team San Diego Chargers and USFL teams LA Express, Arizona Wranglers and Chicago Blitz. As a San Diego Charger Trainer, Hammond was an instrumental part of what has been called the “Greatest NFL Game Ever Played,” an overtime game between the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins in 1982.

His affiliations include the The National Football League Trainers Society and George Allen’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sport. He is also registered with the American Athletic Trainers Association.

Jim attended Sweetwater High School and Southwestern College before moving on to San Diego State. Upon retiring from the professional football ranks in 1985, Jim returned home where he began serving the athletes at Southwestern College.

 

 

Dennis Petrucci
Assistant Athletic Trainer

Dennis Petrucci, ATC

Dennis comes to Southwestern bringing the experience of working with many professional or elite level athletes and teams. He has his A.T.C. (Certified Athletic Trainer from the National Athletic Trainers Association) and a C.S.C.S. certificate as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength & Conditioning Association.

Dennis started his athletic training career at San Diego State University where he received his Bachelor of Science. He then went on to Ohio State University to receive his Master of Arts. As a graduate assistant athletic trainer he worked with several of the Ohio State sports including football, hockey and baseball.  After graduating he began working with professional athletes including several NFL players and eventually returned to San Diego to work with the minor league professional basketball team, the Stingrays, as their Head Athletic Trainer. While there Dennis worked with athletes such as Master P and Magic Johnson. The following year he moved to work as a full time Assistant Athletic Trainer at Pepperdine University where he had opportunities to work with many Olympic level volleyball players and Pro beach volleyball players. He then came back to San Diego to be the Head Athletic Trainer for the San Diego Gulls, a minor league professional hockey team. While with the team they won a national championship and he was  able to work with many athletes in the National Hockey League (NHL). During the Gulls off-season Dennis has also worked with other San Diego area professional teams including the San Diego Spirit, Gauchos, Flash and Sockers. He also worked a few tours as the Head Athletic Trainer for the United States National Rugby Team when they played against some of the best teams in the world such as Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. 

He is married to wife, Christina.
