
Southwestern College boasts one of the most skilled and accomplished coaching staffs in all the nation at any division level. According to Coach Campbell, "we have five Olympians on staff: Dr. Duro Agbede, 1972 Steeple-Chase; Philam Garcia 2000, 2004 in the 200m; Tim Mack, Gold Medallist Pole-vault 2004; Al Joyner, Gold Medallist Triple-jump 1984 and myself, Tonie Campbell, Bronze Medallist 110 Hurdles, 1980, 1984, 1988.
In addition to the skill level of our Olympic caliber coaches, we have returning back to their roots, Jason Baldwin, Laura Sanders, Celene Reyes-Gutierrez and Philam Garcia. Each coach competed for Southwestern College and has returned to assist and lead future champions to their goals and athletic dreams. Each coach was highly successful and champions while competing for SWC. Finally, Coach Oliver Brown is an alumni of Cal Berkley and was a 400m and relay specialist."

Tonie Campbell
After a University of Southern California collegiate, Olympic, International and record setting career, Coach Tonie Campbell returned to USC in 1992 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. While attending USC, Campbell assisted in coaching the track team. Campbell’s coaching produced eight Olympians and one Olympic medalist. In 2000 Coach Campbell became the head Coach at Southwestern where in his first four years he led the Jaguars to their highest conference finishes in school’s history. Campbell has produced three California State Junior College champions thus far. In 2005, Campbell expanded on his coaching duties and accepted the position of managing Director for USATF’s High Performance Center at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
Highlights of Coach Campbell’s career include being Team Captain of the USC Track Team, the 1981 Recipient of the NCAA Scholar Athlete award and in 1982 was voted a member of Runner’s World All American Team. In 1990 Coach was inducted into the Heritage Hall of Fame at USC and in 1996 was an Olympic Torch Runner.

Duro Agbede Ph. D.
With a B.S., M.S. and Ed. S. degree from Jackson State University and a Ph. D. from the University of Southern Mississippi, Duro has an extensive background in teaching and coaching using biomechanical analysis technology. He coached track and field and soccer in higher institutions and sports commissions in Nigeria from 1978-1982, assisted on the cross-country/T&F teams at Jackson State University in 1983-84 and 1988-1990 and coached at University of Southern Mississippi in 1985-1987 before coming to Southwestern in 1991.
Some of Coach Agbede's coaching honors include Pacific Coast Conference Men's Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 2004 and Women's Coach of the Year in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. He was also named the Southwestern College Women's Athletics Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. Most recently he was a nominee for 2006 California Community College Women's Cross-Country Coach of the Year.

PhilAm Garcia
PhilAm Garcia ("Coach Guam") is in his fifth year as a head sprint coach for Southwestern. PhilAm began his track career in Guam developing into a world class sprinter and competing in World Juniors in Annecy, France in 1998, World Championships in Spain in 1999, the South Pacific Games in Gaum in 1999, the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000, the East Asia Games in Osaka, Japan in 2001 and the World championship in Edmonton, Canada in 2001.
PhilAm came to the United States in 2001 and to Southwestern to train because of the expertise of the coaching staff and the proximity to the Olympic Training Center. PhilAm attended Southwestern from 2002 - 2004, running for the Southwestern track team as well as competing in the Olympics in Athens, Greece in 2004. He also competed in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland in 2005.
PhilAm is still an active sprinter for Guam and has a personal track club developing world class sprinters. He is also currently pursuing a degree in Exercise Science. |
