  • INTRA-SQUAD SCRIMMAGE 2010

The JAGS opened the 2010 season with the Maroon and Gold game on Saturday morning.  There are 11 days to go until game one at Escondido HS against Palomar College at 6:00 pm.  There will be a second Maroon and Gold scrimmage on Thursday night in DeVore Stadium at 6:00 pm.  Friends and Families of SWC are welcome to attend.  The cost is free.

    Outstanding performances:

OFFENSE:  The QB competition heated up on Saturday.  Going into the scrimmage freshman RYAN VAN NOSTRAND (Olympian HS) had separated from the other two QB’s, JOSH McCOY (Hawthorne HS FL) and VICTOR PEREZ (Chula Vista HS).  VAN NOSTRAND and McCOY both led their units to TD’s while PEREZ threw for one long TD and rushed for another.  This Thursday night will be the deciding factor on who starts in the opener.  Up front on the OL freshman LT MARK POUVAVE (Monte Vista HS) had a good first outing.  In the receiving corps freshman ANDREW GRIMES (Bonita Vista HS) led all receivers with 5 catches for 50 yards and two reverses for big gains.  At the RB position sophomore CASSY WHITE (San Diego HS) and freshman ANTONIO WILLIAMS (North Carolina) had strong performances.

DEFENSE:  The defense was solid all morning applying pressure on the offense.  Freshman LB THOMAS TUTOGI (Chula Vista HS) played well in the middle and sophomore LB RAMSEY IAPALA (Sweetwater HS) also had a strong game.  In the secondary freshman MARK HYMAN (University City HS) had two interceptions and freshman TYRONE RICHARDSON (Chula Vista HS) had numerous big plays.

SPECIAL TEAMS:  CASSY WHITE (San Diego HS) ran a kickoff back for a 91 yard TD and freshman BEN IJAH (Murrieta Valley HS) also had two nice returns to the 40 yard line.  Freshman kicker CHRIS NAVARRO (Eastlake HS) made 4 field goals in the 35 yard range in a scripted  situation.  The kick block unit also blocked a punt and FG with scoop and score for TD’s.  The punting was handled by VICTOR PEREZ (Chula Vista HS) whose long punt was 48 yards.

Player of the Week
  • SWC vs. SD Mesa (11/7/09)

MJDEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:  MICHAEL JOHNSON (New Smyrna Beach HS / Daytona Beach FL).  MIKE is in his third year with SWC having red shirted this past season.  The starting NT and team Captain stepped up his productivity between the tackles and dominated the interior running game.

IWOFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:  IAN WATTERS (Mammoth HS) a sophomore, IAN has started every game for the JAGS this season.  His outstanding zone blocking this past week allowed our ground game to chew up yardage and lead to victory.

AHOFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:  Fr RB AARON HARRIS (Granite Hills HS) rushed 27 times for 159 yards and a TD.  AARON shattered the single season rushing record set by DANNY HOLMES in 1986 (1,024).  With one game to go AARON leads the Mountain Conference with 1,144 yards.  AARON has also broken the single season rushing TD record with 13 breaking the record set this past season by KENSLOW SMITH (Helix HS/Sac State).

CWSPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE GAME:  CASSY "Snoop" WHITE (San Diego HS) was a major force in the return area for the JAGS...he returned 3 kickoffs for over 100 total yards and was a step away from breaking two of them for TD's.  His outstanding play set our offense up with great field position and kept the Olympians stuck with a long field all night.

FVBIG STICK:  FABIAN VARELA (Southwest HS) set the tone for defensive line play by driving the OT back into the backfield and cut the play off at the start.

  • SWC vs. SBVC (10/31/09)

mcOFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: MARCUS CLEMENTS (Willingborro HS / New Jersey). Our starting RT for a unit that has allowed only 7 sacks in 8 games. MARCUS had a break out game setting the corner stone for a 600 yard offensive effort.

dhDEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: DJ HADDOCK (Eastlake HS) Playing a deep center field free safety. DJ made numerous key open field tackles and kept the defensive secondary organized.
