Roller Coaster of Love
Magic Mountain has nothing on the LADY JAGS; Colossus, nope; Batman, forget about it, barely raises a pulse. The LADY JAGS Roller Coaster of Love, now that will get your blood pumping and if you were visiting Palomar College, standing on the short end of a 3-0 drubbing, well, maybe a tad too fast.
Since beating highly ranked Miramar back on October 14, the JAGS (6-7-3, 4-5-2 conference) have provided their own gut wrenching twists and hair-raising drops. SOUTHWESTERN followed the Miramar win with a 2-1 loss to Cuyamaca and then posted two convincing wins before crashing back down last week against their rival, top ranked Mesa College, 2-0. The JAGS took the loss hard and for a while it seemed that this drop would have no bottom.
Maybe it was all the monsters this week or the full harvest moon hanging like Jack-O-Lantern himself above the training grounds, but something stirred the ladies. Yesterday's match against Palomar began with a splash of rain followed by a rainbow arching overhead. It had been a tough week for the team and this sign surely was of good things to come. One very good thing happened early and often for the JAGS and she goes by the name.......SIMIE "THRILLER" WILTER. The JAGS leading scorer, WILTER bagged a cool first half hat-trick raising season total to eight goals.
While WILTER was terrorizing Palomar's backline our other three freshmans were making noise of their own. CHEMAN SHAWNI recorded another strong performance at central midfield, while KATHY MARTINEZ finally put all the pieces of her game together combining intelligent defending with accurate passing through the midfield.
KAREN "TWINKIE" FLORES logged her first start for the JAGS and made the most of it. TWINKIE epitomize the popular sporting expression...it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Giving up a considerable size advantage, TWINKIE battled Palomar's towering left side attach to a standstill.
The LADY JAGS are on the road this week taking on Imperial Valley and next week concluding the season against Grossmont and Miramar. So, if your heart can take it remove your sunglasses, sit back, lower the safety bar and get ready for what should be another thrilling ride.
