The Southwestern women’s volleyball team started this season off with a bang last weekend at the Grossmont College Scrimmages. In their first appearance of the season the Lady Jaguars beat Palomar College, the 2009 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Champions, in a 2-0 upset. Keeping the momentum and the intensity going in practice, the Lady Jaguars are steadily preparing for their first two pre-season matches. Next week they face off against Chaffey, and host the first home match of the season against Saddleback at 5:00pm (PST) on Friday September 3rd.

I never thought that I would get the chance to play volleyball at the collegiate level but when the opportunity presented itself last year I made a decision to play and to this day I’m grateful that I did. It’s an honor to play for Coach Rock because everything I learned not only made me a better player but it also made me a better coach for my kids. This year we return seven players, welcome six freshmen, and a new assistant coach. Together we are family and the constant support we have for each other will not only make us closer but stronger. This year’s team has a new sense of energy and excitement to get this season started because we have the mindset to PASS the expectation, SET the standards, and KILL the competition. There is a lot of talent on this team and we are ready to play, to rise to the challenge, and to win no matter what. I’m thankful for the memories and experiences that have led me here today. We’ve just only begun but I’m ready to finish what we have started last year. Let’s do it, let’s get them Lady Jags!
  • Whitney Givens - Former Team Member Southwestern College Volleyball Team has been a life changing amazing experience.  As a sophomore, I've learned so much and have grown into a young lady.  This season the girls on the team have such a strong chemistry.  Coach Rock is an awesome coach and I would love to have her when I go onto the next level.  I wish the best of luck for the girls next season.

As a sophomore on this team; I would say the chemistry with this group of girls is very much stronger and versatile. With only four returners on a freshman majority team, a new environment formed. There is so much talent spread across this whole team. Versatility is a strength we have that has been a success. There really is no set position for us girls. Coach Rock can put outside hitters to right sides, outsides playing libero, middles playing out, etc. Whatever she wants to experiment, we’re willing to perform with a positive attitude. This group of girls is amazing! I can say that we have a strong bond between one another. We are like a big family. This season has been a growing process for all of us individually and as a whole. "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success" – Henry Ford.

It’s amazing how much you can accomplish when it does not matter who gets the credit. Sad to say this is my last year, but playing with all of these young adult women has definitely been a life experience to grow mentally, emotionally, and physically not only in volleyball but in life as well. I hope to play at the next level and I couldn’t thank Coach Rock & the Lady Jags for giving me a learning experience season. Next years’ team will be just as strong and I wish you girls the best of luck. GO GET ‘EM LADY JAGS!
