The 4MAT System is more than just the number “4” or the word “four.” It's an instructional methodology model that focuses on the natural learning cycle to enhance student success. The 4MAT model brings added value to our college—it explains learning in terms of the ways that people perceive and process information; it can help us with all human interaction.
Research shows that the implementation of the 4MAT System produces improvements in faculty/student motivation, student retention, & student academic success.
The 4MAT system is implemented in four phases plus a Level III Review:
1. Level I course : This 18-hour workshop is the first step towards teaching participants how to organize lesson plans that explore a full range of learning skills. Participants explore the differences in how people learn, organize instruction to improve student performance, learn how to incorporate analysis and synthesis into lessons, and write a lesson plan that incorporates holistic approach to presenting a core concept.
2. Level II course : In this 18-hour intermediate workshop, participants deepen understanding of personal experience as the basis for learning, learn to extract critical themes from content, learn about diverse forms of intelligence and whole-brain processing, and create a minimum of three concept-connected lesson plans.
3. Assessment course : This 12-hour workshop teaches participants to integrate authentic assessment tools into the 4MAT model and use a variety of methods to measure student achievement.
4. Level III course: This 12-hour workshop for those who have taken Levels I and II was designed in response to a survey in which over 40 instructors indicated they would like a review of 4MAT and an opportunity to create concept-based lesson plans in a facilitate workshop environment.
5. Advanced Training and Certification : This 5-day train-the-trainer program is the final step in the 4MAT implementation process. Participants learn to train others in the 4MAT method of instruction, create interdisciplinary thematic units combining two or more subject areas, refine field-tested units through cooperative work with other participants, and learn how to use the 4MAT method as a tool for understanding the change process.
In addition to its focus and impact on student learning, the 4MAT System offers a framework for systemic improvement of our institutional culture and climate. 4MAT training for administrators, managers and staff can play a significant role in organizational development for improved intra- and inter-office relations, as well as strengthening student and community service.
