In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Southwestern College (SWC) proudly reaffirms its commitment to supporting Native American students, honoring Indigenous cultures, and promoting cultural understanding as the only higher education institution in the South Bay. This dedication is embodied through clubs and programs like the Native American Student Alliance (NASA) club and Native American & Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program, both of which provide crucial support, empowerment, and educational opportunities for Native American and Indigenous students.

NASA offers a safe and welcoming community for students to connect with their cultural heritage, advocate for their needs, and build lasting relationships. The Alliance organizes workshops, cultural events, and advocacy discussions, such as talking circles, that foster a supportive environment for Native American and Indigenous students to thrive academically and personally.

“The Native American Student Alliance has given me a space where I feel connected and understood,” Native American SWC student, Tyra Muggins explains, “It’s more than just a club—it’s a community where we share our culture, support each other, and find purpose in celebrating who we are and where we come from.”

Similarly, the NAIS program deepens cultural engagement by introducing Native and Indigenous perspectives and histories into the academic realm. NAIS courses provide invaluable insights into the rich heritage, social challenges, and significant contributions of Native and Indigenous communities. By spotlighting Native American and Indigenous history and contemporary voices, NAIS promotes cultural understanding and inclusivity, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can benefit from these perspectives.

Throughout Native American Heritage Month, both NASA and NAIS host a variety of events to celebrate Indigenous cultures, achievements, and contributions, like the Kumeyaay Flag Raising that occurred Friday, November 15, 2024. From traditional ceremonies to educational workshops, these events allow our college community to engage meaningfully with Native American and Indigenous histories and their lasting impact on society.

Lucia Napolez, Project Technician for the Office of Student Equity Programs & services states, “Native American Heritage Month is a meaningful opportunity for self-reflection—on yourself, your family, and the land you live on. It's a time to honor Indigenous peoples’ history and cultures and connect with local tribal events in your area. Taking that step can deepen your understanding and appreciation for the Native communities around us.”

Supporting Native American students is integral to our college’s mission of equity and inclusion. This Native American Heritage Month, Southwestern College invites our campus community to join us in celebrating Indigenous culture, honoring Native history, and strengthening our support for Native American students year-round. Through intentional spaces, community support, and academic empowerment, we are building a campus where every student’s heritage and contributions are recognized and celebrated.
