THE FRIENDZONE
The friend zone is an imaginary boundary. The popular term is used to reconcile
personal space and to create social distance. The idea of the friend zone is a conscious
mechanism that creates a slippery space of assumptions and judgment — an exchange
between how vulnerable one feels on the inside versus the conflicting appearances of a
dangerous world. Recently, another version of the friend zone was defined by a 6-foot
radius, and, now that time has passed, that longing distance is beginning to close. In
this epoch, we could see each other's diversity through a distant visual. This occurred
through the windows of family homes, in lines at grocery stores, and in the gloom of
social media. We are in a confused moment of understanding safety, and trust through
the visual — pre-pandemic ideas of language and form has dramatically shifted into
new territories and zones of being. We now require another kind of empathic gaze —
new zones for sharing, new spaces for friendship, and new spaces for building
community.
