Southwestern College

Message from the Dean

Dear SWC Students, Community Members and Colleagues:

Welcome to the website for the Southwestern College School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering. We strive to provide you with information that is accurate and timely, and hope that it meets your needs. If you have any questions about our programs, please do not hesitate to contact the Math, Sciences, and Engineering (MSE) office using the information below.

Our School provides general education, transfer, vocational and continuing education programs in the Life Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering and the Physical Sciences. We offer our diverse student body a wide range of courses at a variety of times during the day, evening and weekends. We offer classes at the main campus in Chula Vista as well as at our Higher Education Centers in Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, and National City.

Caring, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic faculty use multiple teaching approaches including traditional lecture-based courses, computer-based courses which are either online or hybrid models, and cooperative and service learning courses. These classroom environments are designed to enhance each student’s learning experience. Laboratory and field-based science courses are available and study abroad courses have been offered in Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, and other locations.

Students are encouraged to become involved in the collegial life at Southwestern College. Many unique opportunities await students who wish to:

  • participate in enrichment experiences in math and science
  • learn about transfer and career options in math and science
  • gain leadership experience by serving as club officers and tutors
  • work with a faculty mentor
  • conduct research side-by-side faculty using state-of-the-art equipment
  • co-author journal articles

Special programs and clubs include:

Faculty are encouraged to participate in our SMART meeting, which is held at the end of October each year. The objective of this mini-conference is to share experiences in curriculum and instruction between the faculty in the Sweetwater Union High School District and the Southwestern Community College District.

Faculty, staff, and administrators in the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering are dedicated to providing a learning environment that encourages personal growth, professional excellence, collaboration and scholarly achievement.

Should you need assistance, please feel free to contact me via email at or by phone at 619-482-6344. We look forward to serving you.
