Valerie Pennington came to Southwestern College in 1996; her teaching areas of emphasis include Principles of Human Physiology and Human Anatomy and Physiology, as well as General Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Biology and various field study courses.
Valerie began her career as a biologist when she saw her first penguin at the age of 5. Her research experience includes uric acid metabolism in tunicates, cognition in California Sea Lions, brush border membrane transport protein characterization in crustacea and seabird reproductive endocrinology. She has worked in all 7 continents of the world, teaching and studying in some of the most amazing habitats on Earth. Her favorite places include the Amazon rainforest, the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Galapagos Islands, Midway Atoll, the Red Sea, Los Roques Venezuela and islands throughout the Caribbean and across the South Pacific. And of course she has stayed close to her penguin roots, working with penguins in New Zealand, South America and Antarctica. She is an environmental activist and advocate for cancer research.
In her other life, Valerie is a professional dancer, teaching and performing with an Argentine Tango ensemble.
