Program Overview

The Education program focuses on the acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary to complete a degree in education or to obtain a job in the teaching profession. Coursework explores philosophies of education and pedagogy while emphasizing career exploration through public speaking experience, tutor training, and early fieldwork in public school classrooms.

The Teacher Education Preparation certificate is designed for students initiating their preparation to enter the education field. Includes early field experience in K-12 public school classrooms and the skills necessary for success as a teacher through specified coursework. Program participants must attend one STEP program orientation per semester.

Career Options

Employment opportunities in private and public schools for credentialed teachers are excellent due to pending retirements and the demand for graduates with bilingual or special education credentials. Most career options available for the Education major require a bachelor's degree, and some require a California teaching credential or graduate-level degree, and some require a significant accumulation of units. Careers include tutor, after-school program specialist, teaching assistant, substitute teacher, K-12 public school teacher, K-12 special education teacher, post-secondary teacher, self- enrichment teacher, speech-language pathologist, education administrator, counselor, adult literacy specialist, librarian, and childcare worker.
