Y.E.S. Academy at Southwestern College

Y.E.S. (Youth Excellence and Success) Academy provides summer options for families to enroll their entering 4th-10th grade student(s) into Sally Ride Science Junior Academy STEAM courses and/or College for Kids courses. All courses take place on the Southwestern College Chula Vista campus (900 Otay Lakes Road, Chula Vista, CA 91910) and provides students with a new and unique experience into a college atmosphere. Courses focus on students and their abilities to learn, grow, and build upon their excellence and success through a variety of courses fit for everyone.

STEAM Courses by The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy
In partnership with UCSD Extension, this unique take on STEAM education provides opportunties for all students entering 4th-10th grade involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). During these courses, students assume the role of scientist, ocean engineer, computer scientist and more as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects. Top-notch STEAM instructors lead these courses, serving as both teachers and role models. These summer courses also incorporate real-life stories of vibrant women conducting research in each field. Their examples inspire students and help make STEAM careers more accessible. STEAM courses are offered in one-week sessions, Monday-Thursday, throughout the summer.
College for Kids Courses
College for Kids provides challenging and enriching experiences for students entering 4th-10th grade. Courses provide a traditional, yet fun approach in providing curriculum that you might see offered on a college campus. Through engaging teaching methods, instructors design and implement curriculum to students while creating a classroom environment that teachers both independent and group learning. Students can take up to two courses in College for Kids. Please note that Y.E.S. Academy staff do not walk students to and from classes. Courses are offered in two 2-week sessions, Monday-Thursday, throughout the summer.
CFK Classic students need to be entering 4th-10th grade, and must meet one of the following:
- Be a returning College for Kids student. Returning students do not need to provide proof of eligibility, unless notified.
- Have been identified gifted and talented (GATE). GATE students do not need to provide proof of eligibility, unless notified.
- Have a B or a 2.8 average or higher in academic course work and acceptable citizenship grades. Report cards must be uploaded during the online registration process.
- Be recommended into the program by a teacher, coach, counselor, or other adult (non-related) who knows the student well. Recommendation forms will be available here in early spring 2020. Forms must be uploaded during the online registration process.
Writer's Cafe Lunch Supervision
Made to bridge the gap between morning and afternoon courses, Writer's Cafe allows for students to enjoy their lunch on the student union patio while journal writing each day! Students need to bring their lunch each day and we supply the supervision and journals.
SAT Prep Boot Camp
SAT Prep Boot Camp, offered in partnership with UCSD Extension, offers 16 hours of strategies and skills to help improve SAT test outcomes. This program is open to all high school students.
Y.E.S. Academy offers a limited amount of scholarships to eligible families. Scholarship information will be available in early spring 2020.
