My name is John "Randy" Beach (he/him/his) and I'm a Professor of English and Education at Southwestern College. I've been a professor at SWC since 2004 and teach ENGL 116 classes. I hold an M.A. in English from the University of Charleston, a B.A. in English from the College of Charleston, and a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of South Carolina. I'm also the faculty Curriculum Committee chair and have a passion for educational policy and curriculum development.

When I teach an ENGL class I have high expectations for students because I know ALL students can do thoughtful and scholarly work with guidance and instruction that suits their needs. Writing, like exercising or practicing a musical instrument, requires practice and attention to detail, and I do my best to provide students with the tools they need to shine as writers, communicators, and thinkers. Often we focus on topical issues when you take an English course with me, and we discuss a range of issue including the purpose of education, LGBTQIA+ rights, politics, and social media. I try my best to ensure an inclusive and open classroom where all feel invited, and everyone can succeed. Feel free to email me with questions anytime.

I also serve as a commissioner for the Accreditation Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, which accredits community colleges, and serve on various statewide committees for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.
