LNT 70 - Principles of Pruning  Fruit Trees and Vines

Course Description:  Instruction in proper pruning methods of stone fruit trees, evergreen fruit trees, and fruiting vines commonly used in the San Diego landscape. Topics include pruning tools, pruning methods to control shape and increase fruiting quality, and effects of proper and improper pruning methods. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Students get hands-on training in pruning plants at the 4 acre horticulture site at Southwestern College. Pruning is accomplished primarily with hand pruners, pruning saws, and loppers. 

Labs Include:  Labs include pruning deciduous fruit trees, evergreen fruit trees, and vines. 

Field Trips:  This class visits one other site that has fruit trees not growing at Southwestern College.

LNT 72 - Horticultural Equipment: Care and Operation 

Course Description:  Instruction in the safe and proper care and operation of equipment used in the landscape construction and maintenance industry. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  This course uses the following equipment: mowers, edgers, nylon trimmers, tillers,sprayers, blowers, garden tractor and attachments, utility carts, chain saws, shredder-chippers, and more! Students are trained on the 4 acre horticulture site and on the campus of Southwestern College. 

Labs Include:  Labs are hands-on with students being trained and using the equipment listed above. Safety and equipment servicing is also stressed. 

Field Trips:  Trips include visiting an equipment rental yard and an equipment dealer.

LNT 75 - Pond Design, Installation, and Care  

Course Description:  Practices and procedures in the design, construction, and maintenance of ponds used in residential landscapes. Topics covered included: design concepts, materials used, installation procedures, initial pond set-up, and pond culture including the proper use of aquatic plants, fish, and maintaining a proper pond ecology. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course will include the actual installation of a pond in a residential setting.  Normal tools such as shovels, picks, and wheelbarrows will be used. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the installation of an actual working ponds including design, 
layout, excavation, lining, rock work, skimmer and waterfall installation,  filling the pond, and addition of plants and fish. 

Field Trips:  This class will visit a residential home for the purpose of installing a working pond.

LNT 85 - Pesticide Licensing Exam Preparation

Course Description:  Preparation to pass the California Pesticide Applicator's Exam. Topics include pesticide laws, understanding pesticide labels, type of pesticides, application methods, license categories, safety, and pest recognition. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  No equipment is used. Video and computer presentations are used to enhance the learning experience. 

Labs Include:  No labs. The class is a lecture format. 

Field Trips:  No field trips are used in this class.

LNT 94 - Sprinkler System Installation, Maintenance, and Repair

Course Description: Provides instruction in the various types, installation methods, maintenance techniques, and repair of sprinklers, pipes, back-flow devices, valves, wiring, and controllers used in the landscape irrigation industry. Emphasizes efficient controller scheduling to conserve water.

Equipment and Facilities Used: This class uses a wide variety of irrigation components from various manufacturers. The 4 acre horticulture facility and surrounding college campus offers many practical situations for the installation and repair of irrigation components. 

Labs Include: Labs topics include the installation of a sprinklers system including pipes, valves, backflow devices, sprinklers, wiring, and controllers.  Also included is repairing existing systems, diagnosing valve and wiring problems, and the proper scheduling of controllers. 

Field Trips: This class may visit a local irrigation supplier. Guest speakers from the irrigation industry frequently visit the classroom.

LNT 95 - Porfolios, Presentations, and Consultations for Floral Design

Course Description: Designed to provide the skills necessary for floral sales presentations and consultations and to give assistance in the development of the student’s personal portfolio. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  This class utlilizes the floral design lab room to assist in the creation and the evaluation of the student's porfolio.

Labs Include:  No labs exist for this class.

Field Trips:  No field trips are taken for this class.

LNT 100 - Plant and Horticultural Science 

Description: Study of plant structures, functions, taxonomy, and plant-soil-climate relationships. Importance of plants for food, air, and ornamental purposes. Management of plants in greenhouse and nursery structures and in the landscape. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course utilizes standard garden equipment, greenhouses, shade houses, vegetable gardens, rose gardens, and the 4 acre horticulture site.

Labs Include:  Labs include plant propagation by seeds and cuttings, vegetable garden care, pruning techniques, greenhouse management, lawn installation and care, fertilizers and soil amending, plant pest problems, field trips and more! 

Field Trips:  This class has two field trips to specialty nurseries, botanical gardens, and local parks and compost centers.

LNT 101 - Sustainable Energy Studies

Course Description: Studies the growth of the human population and its effects on energy and climate demands with an emphasis on landscaping and the built environment. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: The course utilizes standard garden equipment, greenhouses, shade houses, vegetable gardens, rose gardens, and the 4 acre horticulture site.

Field Trips: This class no required field trips but utilizes guest speakers from green technology and energy organizations.

Units: 3 

LNT 105 - Plant Identification: Trees

Course Description: Identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of 120 trees common to the California landscape. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (The South Bay Botanic Garden) and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include: No labs exist although plants are observed outdoors in their natural setting. 

Field Trips: No field trips are held for this class.

LNT 109 - Plant Identification: Shrubs

Course Description: Identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of 120 shrubs common to the California landscape. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (The South Bay Botanic Garden) and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens.

LNT 113 - Plant Identification: Herbaceous Plants

Note: This is a new class and will not be available for scheduling until Fall, 2016.

Course Description: Identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of 120 annuals, perennials, vines, and ground covers common to the California landscape. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (The South Bay Botanic Garden) and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include: No labs exist although plants are observed outdoors in their natural setting.

LNT 116 - Plant Identification: Fruiting Plants

Course Description:  Identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of 50 plants which produce edible fruits in the landscape. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include:  No labs exist although plants are observed outdoors in their natural setting.

LNT 118 - Plant Identification for Floral Design

Course Description:  Designed to provide the student with knowledge of the trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials suitable for use in floral arrangements. Topics include appropriate scientific names, seasonal availability, and lasting qualities. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include:  No labs exist although plants are observed outdoors in their natural setting. 

Field Trips:  No field trips are held for this class.

LNT 119 - Plant Identification: Xeriphytic Plants

Course Description:
  Identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of 100 plants which grow in the San Diego region and have reduced water needs. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (also know as the South Bay Botanic Garden) will be used and and we will take numerous field trips to visit areas in San Diego County which highlight xeriphytic plants. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include:  No labs exist although plants are observed outdoors in their natural setting. 

Field Trips:  Frequent field trips to places such as Torrey Pines State Park, the Cuyamaca mountains, Old Town and Presido, and the Water Conservation Garden.

LNT 120 - Landscape Design 1

Course Description:  Fundamentals and history of landscape design for residential and commercial properties. Topics include drafting skills, functional and aesthetic uses of plants,circulation, site evaluation, plant selection, topography, and design theory. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course provides drafting equipment and drafting tables to be used in class. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the learning of drafting skills and various drawing and design projects. Students learn design methods by hands-on drafting of different design problems and projects. 

Field Trips:  This class often visits different landscape themes to illustrate the lessons 
being learned in class. 

Units:  4 

LNT 122 - Landscape Design 2 

Course Description:  Further study in the field of landscape design with emphasis in site analysis, spatial analysis, sensory evaluation, cost considerations, energy conservation through proper design, site details, landscape maintenance specifications, larger scale designs, and improved drawing methods. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The class utilizes the drafting classroom and provides all needed drafting supplies. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the creation of larger scale landscape plans and more refined drawing methods. Students learn more advanced presentation graphics and design types. 

Field Trips:  This class will visit possible sites for student design projects. 

Units: 4 

Prerequisite:  LNT 120 - Landscape Design 1 or equivalent 
(note: if you have not completed Landscape Design 1 but feel you have the required skills, attend the first class meeting and obtain approval from the instructor. You will not be able to enroll in the class until your receive an approved form signed by the instructor)

LNT 123 - Landscape Maintenance

Course Description:  Instruction in the knowledge and skills necessary to perform professional landscape maintenance. Includes proper use of tools and equipment, weed and pest control methods, planting procedures, grading and drainage, pruning techniques, basic plant identification, sprinkler maintenance and repair, and materials used in the trade. Also, the operation of a landscape maintenance route is also discussed. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The class uses mowers, edgers, nylon trimmers, tillers, trenchers, blowers, shredder/chippers, chain saws, and hedge trimmers. Maintenance is performed on the 4 acre horticulture facility. 

Labs Include:  Labs include hands-on instruction in learning the various landscape maintenance techniques describe above. 

Field Trips:  This class visits sites where excellent landscape maintenance is being performed and visits local suppliers of landscape maintenance tools and materials.

LNT 124 - Landscape Construction

Course Description: Covers proper methods of estimating, laying out, and installing landscape hardscape features including concrete, paver patios, walkways, garden retaining walls, wood decks, fences, overhead shade structures, benches, and planters. Includes proper knowledge and use of building materials.

Equipment and Facilities Used: The use of cement mixers is practiced. Concrete trucks are brought in for larger pours. The projects are installed at the 4 acre horticulture site.  Woodworking tools are also used. 

Labs Include: Labs include the preparation of the project site, grading, form installation, 
installing reinforcement materials, pouring, finishing the surface, brick wall foundation preparation, laying brick, using mortar-less block, and installing drainage. It also includes proper procedures and practices for the installation of decks, fences, and other landscape lumber projects.

Field Trips: This class has no field trips.

LNT 128 - Sprinkler Design 

Course Description:  Principles of water application to ornamental areas including hydraulics, sprinkler design, drip systems, subsurface irrigation, and related irrigation practices. Methods for efficient water application and water conservation are stressed. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course uses drafting equipment and numerous sprinkler catalogs. Classes are held in a drafting room and outdoor irrigation systems are studied. 

Labs Include:  Labs include installation of a small irrigation system, hydraulic demonstrations, drafting of problems and designs related to irrigation. 

Field Trips:  This class has one field trip to Hunter Industries.

LNT 129 - Sustainable Landscape/Water Auditor

Course Description: Sustainable theory and practices in the evaluation of energy and resource conservation and recycling in landscape design, landscape installation, landscape maintenance, and landscape irrigation.  Students learn how to conduct a profession landscape and water audit.

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The use of the horticulture site and private residential landscapes is a fundamental aspect of this class. 

Labs Include:  No labs exist for this class however site visits are conducted.

Field Trips:  Visitation of residential and commercial landscapes for evaluation purposes.

Units: 3

LNT 131 - Landscape Contracting and Estimating 

Course Description:  Instruction in proper estimating for landscape construction projects, landscape maintenance bids, irrigation projects, and interiorscaping projects. Proper interpretation of blueprints, specifications, and bid procedures. Understanding of business procedures relating to bidding and estimating, job costing, overhead, and profit percentages. Study topics for the California State Contractors Exam. Running a landscape contracting business. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  No equipment other than the use of computers to assist in estimating are used. 

Labs Include:  Lab consists of in the class take-offs of blueprints for typical landscape jobs. Job costs are developed with the assistance of the instructor. Overhead and profit percentages are added to determine the final bid price. 

Field Trips:  This class visits local jobs in progress and site where landscape maintenance bids would be typically estimated.

LNT 132 - Turf Management 

Course Description:  Study of the skills and knowledge needed to install and maintain turf grass areas.  Topics include grass anatomy, grass identification, methods of installing a new lawn and renovating existing lawns, turf grass maintenance requirements, and turf grass pest control.

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Use of turf grass maintenance and establishment equipment including lawn mowers, edgers, rototillers, sod cutters, aerifiers, and verticutters.  The class utilizes the horticulture site's lawns and putting green during lab learning experiences. 

Labs Include:  Turf grass identification, lawn establishment, lawn care such as mowing, edging, watering, and pest control.  Labs also include field trips.
 
Field Trips:  Visits to local golf courses, Qualcomm stadium, and Petco Park.

Units: 3 

LNT 133 - Golf Course and Sports Turf Management 

Course Description:  Designed to give the student advanced study in the specialization of both golf course and athletic field management. Includes specialized turf management techniques, specialized equipment, budget development, scheduling requirements, and administrative considerations.

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Larger scale turfgrass equipment is used.  

Labs Include:  Hands-on operation of larger scale turfgrass maintenance equipment.
 
Field Trips:  Visits to local golf courses, Qualcomm stadium, and Petco Park.

Units: 3 

Important Note:   This class is not taught at Southwestern College.  Student must enroll and take this course at Cuyamaca College and after successful completion, transfer those units back to Southwestern College.

LNT 134 - Soils

Course Description:  Instruction to soil derivation, characteristics, and classification. Uses andmanagement of soils including moisture requirements, soil texture, structure, pH,cultivation, and amendments. Methods to improve existing soil problems. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Students are trained in basic soil testing with soil test kits. In the field analysis ofsoils by sight and feel are also covered. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the testing of soil for texture classification, nutrient levels, pH, and organic matter. Soil salinity levels are also determined. 

Field Trips:  This class has field trips to visit different soil structures and horizons 
located in the San Diego area. A trip to a local composting facility may also be taken.

LNT 136 - Plant Pest and Disease

Course Description:
  Effects of mites, insects, weeds, and diseases on ornamental plants. Identification of life cycles, hosts and habitat relationships, along with methods and materials used to control plant pests. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  This course shows as many live specimen pests as possible. Pest problems are observed on the plants growing on the Southwestern College campus and horticulture site. 

Labs Include:  No labs exist in this class. 

Field Trips:  This class may visit local nurseries or hardware stores to observe the wide variety of pest control methods, devices, and chemicals available for control of plant pests. 

Units:  3 

LNT 138 - Floral Design 1

Course Description:  Theory, techniques, and skills practiced in the floral design industry. Instruction in basic design principles, cut flower preparation and care, merchandising and packaging. Instruction the creation of basic floral arrangements. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course utilizes the floral design lab room and floral coolers. Flowers are provided for students. If students wish to keep their arrangement, they must pay for the flowers and supplies used. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the making of various arrangements such as corsages, centerpieces, and holiday designs. 

Field Trips:  This class takes one field trip to visit local flower shops. 

Units:  3

LNT 140 - Floral Design 2

Course Description:  Continuation of Floral Design I. More emphasis is placed on wedding, funeral, banquet, and seasonal floral design work. In addition, a more in-depth study of flower shop management will be pursued. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course utilizes the floral design lab room and floral coolers. Flowers are provided for students. If students wish to keep their arrangement, they must pay for the flowers and supplies used. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the making of various arrangements such as 
wedding and funeral pieces, and larger scale designs. 

Field Trips:  This class takes one field trip to visit the San Diego Floral Auction. 

Units:  3

LNT 141 - Floral Design 3

Course Description:  Further development of the creative ability of the student in floral design. Each individual will be responsible for designing original arrangements for the following topics: tropical, theme luncheons, special events, hotel lobbies, etc. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course utilizes the floral design lab room and floral coolers. Flowers are provided for students. If students wish to keep their arrangement, they must pay for the flowers and supplies used. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the construction of the arrangements mentioned above. In addtion, students must present their designs to the class. 

Field Trips:  No field trips are taken in this class.

LNT 143 - Floriculture and Nursery Operations: Tree and Shrub Production

Course Description: Designed to provide information with regard to the propagation and growth requirements of trees and shrubs, production scheduling, containers for various stages of growth, and pests and diseases encountered during production. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Greenhouse and shade house structures are used.  Student learn how to grow plants from a seedling or root cutting into a sellable 1 gallon size.

Labs Include:  Greenhouse management, soil media types and preparation, transplanting, fertilization, and pruning to produce marketable plants.

Field Trips:  Field trips to local plant production nurseries.

Units: 1

LNT 144 - House Plant Care and Production

Course Description:  Fundamentals of plant selection, placement, and maintenance for interior purposes. Includes plant identification, watering, fertilization practices, pest and disease control, pruning, and site evaluation.

Equipment and Facilities Used:  Tropical greenhouse, production greenhouse, shade house, and horticulture site.

Labs Include:  Proper house plant production, care, fertilization, and pest control.

Field Trips:  Visits to local growers of interior plants.

LNT 146 - Plant Propagation 

Course Description:  Provides plant propagation and production practices with emphasis on nursery operations including sexual and asexual reproduction, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, plant pest and disease control; structures and site layout; preparation and use of propagating and planting mediums; use and maintenance of tools and equipment; regulations pertaining to plant production.

Equipment and Facilities Used: The class utilizes greenhouses and propagation facilities. Proper media, sanitation, and growth conditions are stressed. 

Labs Include: Labs include growing new plants from seeds, stem cuttings, performing grafting techniques, utilizing division and separation, and demonstration of micro-propagation through the use of tissue culture. 

Field Trips: This class often visits local growers that utilize different methods of propagation.

LNT 147 - Wedding Design and Event Planning

Course Description:  Focus on the mechanics and placement of professionally designed wedding floral arrangements. Strong focus is placed on specialty designs, decorations, and placement that reflect contemporary lifestyle choices of ceremony and reception sites. Study will feature sales, planning, and implementation. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course utilizes the floral design lab room and floral coolers. Flowers are provided for students. If students wish to keep their arrangement, they must pay for the flowers and supplies used. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the making of various wedding arrangements and decorations. 

Field Trips:  This class takes one field trip to visit a local flower shop that specializes in wedding arrangements.

LNT 148 - Horticultural Business Practices

Course Description:  Topics in the operation of a small horticultural business including starting up, advertising, marketing, employee relationships, record-keeping, laws and regulations that pertain to small businesses, obtaining and dealing with customers, suppliers, and taxes. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  None 

Labs Include:  No labs exist for this course. However, students do develop a business plan as part of this course. 

Field Trips:  This class has no field trips although frequent guest speakers from horticultural businesses visit the classroom.

LNT 151 - Plant Identification I

Course Description: Provides identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of plants adapted to the climate of Southern California. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (The South Bay Botanic Garden) and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include: Field trips, observation of plants covered during the lecture portion of the class. 

Field Trips: Includes trips to visit different plant palettes and plant communities around San Diego County. 

Units: 3

LNT 152 - Plant Identification II

Course Description: Provides identification, growth characteristics, environmental requirements, and uses of plants adapted to the climate of Southern California. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: No equipment is used. Our 4 acre horticulture facility (The South Bay Botanic Garden) and surrounding college campus has over 500 plant varieties. Students observe over 95% of the plants covered as mature, in-the-ground specimens. 

Labs Include: Field trips, observation of plants covered during the lecture portion of the class. 

Field Trips: Includes trips to visit different plant palettes and plant communities around San Diego County.

LNT 299 - Independent Study

Course Description: Individual study or research in some area of landscape or nursery technology which is of particular interest to the studenta and not included in regular courses of the college.

LA 104 - Landscape Graphics and Planting Design

Course Description:  Instruction to presentation graphics and drafting for landscape design, including step by step study of how to draw a conceptual landscape plan and how to draft landscape construction drawings. Use of plant materials in design. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The course provides drafting equipment and drafting tables to be used in class. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the learning of drafting skills and drawing methods necessary to produce quality drawings. 

Field Trips:  This class has no field trips

LA 200 - Introduction to Computer-Aided Landscape Design

Course Description:  Introduction to computer aided design for the purpose of creating landscape and sprinkler plans using the software Autocad and LandFX. Creation of computer-generated landscape, sprinkler, and section drawings. Use of the computer to assist in cost estimation and plant selection. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The classroom contains 20 computers available during class. Opens labs allow for working on projects during non-class hours. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the actual use of the computer program to create and print out landscape and sprinkler plans. 

Field Trips:  This class has no field trips.

LA 201 - Advanced Computer-Aided Landscape Design

Course Description:  Further instruction in the use of CAD software. Students learn more advanced drawing and presentation skills using the software Autocad and LandFX. Construction of final drawings including rendered landscape plans, irrigation plans with details, topography and 3D plans, and complete landscape estimates. Use of various softwares that increase production potential. 

Equipment and Facilities Used:  The classroom contains 20 computers available during class. Open labs allow for working on projects during non-class hours. 

Labs Include:  Labs include the actual use of the computer program to create and print out landscape and sprinkler plans. 

Field Trips:  This class has no field trips.

Prerequisite: LNT 120 - Landscape Design 1 or equivalent 
(note: if you have not completed Landscape Design 1 but feel you have the required skills, attend the first class meeting and obtain approval from the instructor. You will not be able to enroll in the class until your receive an approved form signed by the instructor) 

LNT 128 - Sprinkler Design 

Course Description: Principles of water application to ornamental areas including hydraulics, sprinkler design, drip systems, subsurface irrigation, and related irrigation practices. Methods for efficient water application and water conservation are stressed. 

Equipment and Facilities Used: The course uses drafting equipment and numerous sprinkler catalogs. Classes are held in a drafting room and outdoor irrigation systems are studied. 

Labs Include: Labs include installation of a small irrigation system, hydraulic demonstrations, drafting of problems and designs related to irrigation. 

Field Trips: This class has one field trip to Hunter Industries.
