Second Year Experience

Each SYE student is paired with a peer mentor who has experience navigating the Southwestern College campus and its resources. SYE is proud to have several peer mentors who have also transferred from SWC to 4-year universities and can share their experiences with current students. 

 In addition to peer mentors, students will receive support from a team of staff and counselors. SYE has designated counselors who meet with SYE students to create education plans and ensure students are on the right track to meet their goals. 

The SYE team plans and promotes events and workshops that are geared towards second-year students’ needs and the three SYE focus areas. 

Active SYE students will receive enrollment priority which will allow them to register for classes at an earlier date and time than students without priority status. 

Each semester, SYE students are asked to complete program “milestones”. The SYE program milestones are two peer mentor appointments, one counseling appointment, and one workshop or event focused on career exploration, transfer, or financial literacy.

Yes! If you are a second-year student and interested in participating in the SYE program, you can contact us to be added to our interest list and we will reach out to you to discuss the process. 

Yes! SYE is open to all EOPS students in their second year of college. 

No. FYE participants will be automatically enrolled in SYE for their second year at Southwestern College. No additional application or paperwork is required.

Yes. SYE peer mentors and staff are available to work with students online and in person, but all in-person events take place at the Chula Vista campus.

A Southwestern College counselor works with students to select courses, set up a Student Education Plan (SEP), and ensure academic requirements are being met.

A SYE peer mentor works with SYE students to assist with planning academic/career goals, identify methods for reaching goals, connect them to resources on campus, and check in on their progress through SYE milestones.
