Federal Work Study

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a financial aid program that gives you the opportunity to earn money for college through part-time employment while you are enrolled as a student. Unlike grants, Work-Study is not money deposited into your account — it is a job. You work, you earn a paycheck, and that money helps cover your college expenses. Positions are available in a wide variety of on-campus and off-campus departments, giving you real work experience while you are in school.

To participate in the FWS program, Work-Study must be included as part of your financial aid award package. You must also be enrolled in at least 6 units and may not work more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session.

How to Apply

Complete and submit your FAFSA using SWC's school code 001294. After your financial aid file is complete and your eligibility is determined, the Financial Aid Office will notify you by email. If Federal Work-Study is included in your award package and you are interested in a position, you must seek employment through the Student Employment Office. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information on how to get started.

Available Jobs

FWS positions are available in many different on-campus and off-campus departments. A current listing of available positions is maintained by the Student Employment & Work Experience Services.

Hours and Pay

The maximum number of hours you may work per week while classes are in session is 20. Your actual allocation may be less depending on the size of your FWS award for the semester. You will be paid once per month at the end of the month. You must submit your timesheet to your supervisor by the scheduled due date each month.

Keeping Your Award

To remain eligible for FWS from semester to semester, you must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and stay enrolled in at least 6 units. Your FWS award is only valid for the academic year indicated in your award package. Once your funds are fully earned or the academic year ends, your FWS position will be terminated.
