Sarah (Apgar) Sigala was born to run. As a SWC Jaguar, she led her team to the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships in 2005 and 2006 earning the PCAC’s Outstanding Cross Country Athlete Award. In 2006 she became the first female runner in SWC’s history to win an individual California Community College Cross Country Championship.
A lifelong golf addict, Howard “Howie” Knodt excelled at Southwestern College earning an Associate Degree and competing on the intercollegiate golf team where he was named Mission Conference Golfer of the Year in 1977 and 1978. He continues to actively compete as a “Senior Player” and in 2009 and 2010 was named SCGA Senior Player of the Year.
Viridiana “Viry” Martino graduated from SWC in 2007 with a 4.0 GPA and was selected Pacific Coast Conference Female Scholar of the Year, Pepsi Scholar of the Year for California, and earned the Joseph Conte Mathematics/Computer Science Academic Excellence Award, and the SWC MESA Student of the Year Award. As a tennis player, she was an All Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Doubles Team Selection and was a Southern California Regional Qualifier.
In 1992 Patti Moore became the Cheerleading Advisor. Under her leadership and constant support, the team has reached a level of excellence that has never been achieved before. Since 2005, the squad has won 10 first place titles and 7 second place titles in competitions qualifying them to participate in the annual NCAA Collegiate Cheer Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida.
From 1971 to 1973, Allen Hazard competed in cross country and track and field for the Southwestern College Apaches. When he graduated, he had set 8 new school records and recorded the fastest mile in school history. Today he is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Manager, and an Exercise Science and Health Education Adjunct Professor at Southwestern College.
