What is SOLID?

Synchronous Online Learning Instructional Design (SOLID) is a 2-week, 20-hour course that provides the opportunity to work closely with your peers as you learn how to plan, design, and deliver synchronous "live online" course sessions that are learner-centered, interactive, and rewarding for both students and instructor.

You will develop inclusive community norms and a lesson plan for a live online session that uses effective instructional skills to support the diverse needs of our students. You will also learn to apply federal, state, and accreditation standards for distance education to your live online course sessions.

You will achieve these goals by asynchronously engaging with content and completing assignments in Canvas as well as attending synchronous sessions in Zoom that scaffold your learning. By the end of our two weeks together, you will have all the tools you need to design and deliver an engaging, effective and accessible synchronous online course session where your students can thrive.

Learning Outcomes

  • Utilize Zoom to schedule, conduct, and record engaging live online instructional sessions.
  • Design live online instructional sessions that engage students in active learning.
  • Use recordings of live instructional sessions in compliance with student privacy, accessibility, and interaction regulations and legal recommendations.
  • Develop strategies to foster inclusion for all students.

Participation in Live Zoom Sessions

This program requires your participation in four one-hour live Zoom sessions. Each week, you must attend one general class meeting (either Mondays 6-7 pm or Tuesdays 9-10 am) and one small-group meeting, which will take place on dates and times chosen by group members.

Time Commitment & Recommended Skills

This class will take approximately 10 hours each week for a total of 20 hours. Your time will vary based upon your level of experience with online teaching, Canvas, and web technologies.
