Active Employees
If an employee is actively working and covered under a District-sponsored medical plan, neither the employee nor their spouse (if applicable) needs to enroll in Medicare Part B. Enrollment in Medicare Part B becomes necessary only when the employee retires, resigns, or their employment ends. Coverage under Medicare Part B must begin on the first day of the month following the employee’s retirement, resignation, or termination.
RETIREES
Approximately three months before a retiree or their spouse turns 65, a letter will be mailed outlining available options. The individual turning 65 must enroll in Medicare Part B, which will become effective on the first day of the month in which they turn 65. The letter will include a summary of the senior plan and a rate sheet.
